15 Seconds Miracle- That all I needed.
I hate dentist Needle.
The dentist pointed the needle in the air… to me, that wasn’t a needle…. It was a handgun. I felt as if I was about to die any second. I was searching for the closes chair, bed, and table to crawl under. I was terrified. I couldn’t deal with it, I got up and left the dentist office.
The night before this ordeal I couldn’t sleep. I have a needle-phobia. Working as a nurse for twenty three years you could understand how this is a problem! I am a 45 years old and I am petrified of having my blood drawn or even siting on a dentist chair.
I visited the dentist three times in the last 20 years. I know that’s terrible, but I can’t stand it when dentist tell me “Relax it will just be a second. For me it’s an eternity. Other dentists have told me “my patients don’t even feel the needle”. Yeah right! I felt it. I quickly realized that dentist don’t really care what their patients feel emotionally or physically when giving them shots, this is pretty like most of the physicians I work with.
I couldn’t continue living with this phobia and this horrible toothache! So after 25 years of this phobia I decided to see a psychiatrist to prep me before I go to the dentist.
My psychiatrist looked like a hot movie star, not like physician. Good start I thought.
“Needle-Phobia and other phobias are very common. It is not hard to treat it, he said. “But you have to be willing to leave your comfort zone.” I was out of options, so I gave it a shot!
He made me watch videos of blood drawn and dental shot all while resting the tip of a very large needle on my skin. I felt restless, sweat starting dripping from my pores. I couldn’t handle this, I had to get up and go! Even a dreamy doctor like him couldn’t make me sit through this type of therapy-I guess I wasn’t ready to move on.
I left his office, thinking that’s it, I’m never going to get over this phobia! Once I got in my car, I called my best friend Daniela and told her about the nightmare experience with Dr. Dreamy. Daniela told me “I totally get it, going to the dentist scares the hell out of me too but I really like my Dentist”
“I actually have to get a cavity filled tomorrow, you should come with me and meet him.” She said. This toothache was killing me, I knew I needed to get some dental work, so meeting a dentist couldn’t hurt-so I reluctantly agreed.
The next day, I found myself in the dental office with Daniela. Daniela told her dentist, Doctor Juan Buitrago all about my fear of needles. Let’s look at your teeth he said. I immediately clamped up, gripped the chair and braced myself for the worse.
He took a handle that look more like electric tooth-brush, attach something that look like a fork to it, he placed it on my hand and I felt a slight vibration. He said, “I will place this in your mouth and take x-ray, is that ok?” It sounded strange but it’s a new technology I thought. He placed the fork in my mouth and started the vibrations. He moved it around my mouth and after 15 or 20 seconds removed it.
Ok, he said I just gave you three shots. Soon you will feel a numbing sensation and we’ll get to work! I looked at Daniela who had a big smile on her face. She laughed and said he may not be hot as your psychiatrist but at least he cares about his patients.
25 years of anxiety, many sleepless nights and my fear of going to the dentist vanished in 15 seconds. I found a dentist who cares, acknowledged my phobia and Vibe. Does your dentist Vibe?
